Birds at the Lake

So, here are some of my favorites from last year. The weather is getting nicer so it's time to get back out there and have another go at it, but I figured I would see if I could get some feedback on these in the hopes of getting some better results this year.

Here is a duck with an attitude. I guess I got too close.

I liked the way this duck was drinking at the end of the pier.

Gull in flight.

I think this was mating season...The one on the left wasn't happy about the competition.

They're not "bad". They are just duck photos.

A Flickr search for "duck" yields just shy of 2 million hits. Seagulls, 600,000. Rose, 3.8 million. Pigeon, 500K.

I actually like the last one.....but yes....duck photos are a dime a dozen.

You've caught some really neat moments in each of your shots. But the overall effect isn't strong, for example they all have the same very blue (a.k.a. unnatural) background, as opposed to a more "wild" setting like bullrushes, or some sort of a natural environment.

They are all good shots, but they need more "omph", if you know what I mean? Something to take them from "I shot these ducks in the City Park" to something more National Geographic.

Hmm, well, I can't think of any photos I have seen on this or any other forum that isn't of a subject that has been photographed thousands or millions of times. I will, however, look for ways to make future shots original.

I know the gull is pretty ordinary, but the other 3 I thought were a little different than the norm.

Thanks. It's just I live in Dallas, Tx. We don't have a lot of wildlife around so I like to go to Lake Lewisville and take photos. We don't have Bald Eagles or anything exciting like that. We pretty much have buzzards, gulls, and ducks. I try to do the best with what I have available.
