Black and White Baby Boy

Soo..I always think my black and white edits look a little weird. I like this one of my son and wanted to see what you guys think. He had just fell off the slide and I caught this photo. He hates when I take photos, so I love it. But hard to be critical to photos of your own kids lol.

Very cute!! If I had to do this myself in post, I might think about dragging a gradient from the top right corner, downward to darken that spot. It really draws the eye away from your son's face. Maybe try to darken that corner and then bring the entire exposure up a bit or dodge his face a bit to lighten it up. I have such a tough time getting my 2yrold to cooperate. She hates the camera and won't even look at me when it's out anymore. Oh well, we keep shooting and hoping, I guess.

That's exactly what I would have done. Now time for one of the pros to weigh in.

It's very midtone heavy. When I convert to B&W, I want to see both blacks and whites. There are neither in this shot, so it lacks contrast and pop. I upped exposure a bit, and pushed the clarity and whites and darkened the blacks. All in Lightroom. You could probably go further with it even.

I agree with what has been said already.. The bright spot draws the eye away from your adorable son and the image looks muddy, which means you have no blacks and whites, but a lot of midtones. You should set the blinkies on your camera so you can see when you blow out any portion of the image or learn to read your histogram..Either one will help you properly expose your pictures.
