I'd try darkening the grass around the root and pushing up the contrast on the "eyes" and "mouth."

Thanks everyone. This is actually in my back pasture by our pond. My 5yo niece actually saw it a few months ago while we were on a little nature walk. I kept meaning to get a good picture of it and since Halloween was approaching...

Ken, I had a similar idea about isolating the root, that's one of the reasons I mad it B&W, that and I thought it would be more spooky. I'm at work right now but if I get home early enough I'll play with the image a bit.
