Bubble Shot for C&C

I've wanted to try the freezing bubbles photographs for a while. It's a little too windy outside today so I decided to practice indoors and what the hell, let's try it with flash too.

I'm using a homemade grid (purple straws and gorilla tape) on my sb700 Nikon CLS triggered by the commander flash on my d7100. I also practiced using the flash lock in TTL mode. Opps I guess I was in TTL-BL. I'll try it with standard TTL next time.

What's your take on this? How could I improve?

The shot is interesting to me as more of an abstract than a bubble shot. It almost has that feel of selective coloring of the purple on the top of the bubble.

I"m not sure of what you could have done to improve this. Because I don't know what you were going after. I've shot bubbles outside with a light and an umbrella and gotten some really cool colors. (I had a wooden fence as my backdrop).

So as a bubble shot, your vote would be give it a more interesting environment?

I must admit I spent most of my time in this shoot trying to remove clutter and distracting elements from the frame.

A bubble with a total white or black background didn't look very interesting in my attempts. Hence the blinds

What sort of light placement did you do for your shots?

I don't know if it is a more interesting environment or just more light. The colors that will come out on the bubble is what I would be looking for.

I understand looking for something without distractions and clutter.

Here is the one that is my favorite that I did. I haven't tried to do one in a while, so I may have to give it a go this evening, as it is cold enough to possibly freeze them.

The reason I ask about light placement is I tried umbrellas and besides most of my photos turning into essentially pictures of my umbrella, it was near impossible to control what was lit and what wasn't in my tiny apartment.

Here's one:

Note this is a 1 umbrella shot, despite what the bubble may be telling you

I see what you mean. Mine was an umbrella at between 45-90 degrees camera left. It was maybe 4-6 feet away from the bubbles and I was using a 28-135mm at 135mm at it's widest aperture. I was using a bubble gun, so I wasn't trying to isolate a single bubble. My kids were running that for me and I was sitting in a chair with the camera on a tripod at just above waist high. (On my back patio).

I used a scored vacuum extension tube to blow my larger than average bubbles. With the large bubbles at least, I'm really not convinced that you can get more light without sending the light everywhere. For example you can see in this one what's really getting shot is the room surrounding the bubble you can see the door and me in the darker kitchen.

I've found myself a little disappointed in the verticals of the original so have corrected that too:
