Buy Canon and help the Japanese people

Buying any japanese product that is already on the market doesn't help them at all. The companies have already made their buck sell those supplies to retailers, and those retailers are jacking up the price with the excuse that there will be a shortage soon. So essentially, you are paying more to benefit these retailers who are just going to pocket the increased profit.

If you want to help them this way, buy directly from Japan instead. Then you may have to worry about radioactive products.....

Anyone else with me in thinking that's an *insanely* small amount of money? $1 million? Are you joking? A corporation that makes $3-4 billion in revenue every year surely should be able to donate more than $1 million to basically resurrect a large portion of a country...

It feels so good to donate!......I'm donating to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Musuem.....

Sad :er:

How drastically inappropriate.

Relax. It was said in jest. I wanted to make as idiotic of a comment as this thread was predicated on. Funny how its acceptable to use thousands of people dying as an excuse to bash one camera maker over another, but I am the jerk for saying I don't wish to listen to people on a soapbox, and wish to donate MY money where I choose. Who gives a rats @ss how much ANYONE gives. The point is that they gave something. I remember an old saying called "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

i bought a few things of ebay from japan, the only problem is that they sell these things so cheap that it wont help at all.

Just bought my Nikon 24-70mm about 20 minutes ago. :D

Revenue does not equal to profit. Plus, it's not up to the company to decide freely how they are going to spend the money. The share holders decides that. $1million is small by many different kinds of comparison, but is huge in many ways as well.

No company will ever make unprofitable investment. Donations are investment in exchange for reduced taxation. There is no real good will when it comes to corporate America.

On the other hand, I am pretty impressed with Google. I cannot find the article that I read a few days ago, but basically, Google gives its engineers one day of the week to work on side projects that they are passionate about, and the people finder that Google launched for both the Christchurch and Japan quake happened to be from the results of an engineer working on something that he is passionate about out of the 20% of his time as an employee. Pretty much all companies will only put money at places where they can see direct potential of return. Google trusts its employees to decide what they want to do, and it turned out to be good for not just them, but everyone.

I want my company to pay me(travel expenses) to go to Japan to volunteer.
