buying the nifty 50 today

yeee haw!! going to a staff meeting, then a staff training session, then by 12:20 I should be the proud owner of a nikkor 50mm 1.8 yeeee haw.

Awesome! I really want one of these, but I think I'm gonna save and get the AF-S version that nikon is going to put out soon. I don't mind manual focus for some things, but I think it'd drive me crazy having to do it ALL the time on my D40.

Can I ask a stupid question? What exactly is "Nifty 50"

I have a 50mm lens on my Cannon. Is this the same thing? What is so special about this lens?

Nifty Fifty is the term used typically for both Canon and Nikon's 50mm 1.8 lens.

The reason its nifty is because of the price vs picture quality / aperture size.
