C&c requested so I can improve take two!

I have posted this before, though it was for the weekly challenge so it didn't actually get any feedback. I would like to try this again doing something like a pirate ship, perhaps.

I know my biggest mistake was forgetting to turn off my modeling lights and leaving my ss too long. By the time I noticed the kids were over the project for the day. I also think the lighting could be drastically improved. I was trying to light up the basket with my barn doors, but it spilled onto the boys and made for a weird setup.

I would love some thorough criticism and ideas on how I can improve on take two!

Really, really clever. I like this a lot. I agree that the lighting on the children & basket isn't 100%, but it's not horrible. What was the lighting set-up and can we see the colour version?

Thanks TiredIron. Sure I suppose you can see the color, but there is a reason its B&W. As you can see, none of my white balances matched. :blush:

This one is pretty rough, there is some editing done after the B&W layer that is apparently, in B&W also. ;-)

Lighting.... Lets see if I can remember. There was a gridded barn door low to the ground. I was trying to keep it on the basket only at first. I had a hair light....gridded I believe. and I think had a reflector trying to add more light into the faces, but I don't remember exactly. Obviously I am missing a Key light. Not sure what I was thinking there?....Sometimes I get an idea and rush through it, I definitely need to work on slowing down the creative process.

I like the composition and I think it's a pleasing image to look at. The boys look cute.
As I looked longer I was left wondering what they were holding in their hands, and why.
I think it would be really neat if you could do some work in PS to make it look like the light bulb in his hand is an actual light source.

I think some guy ropes to the gondola would help, as would making a line across the bottom of the balloon. I DO LIKE this concept!

One is a map, one has a compass. I really wish I had been able to make that more evident. As for the flashlight, there was a flashlight illuminating it, but I actually toned it down in post because it was so bright!
