cactus/ebay trigger

Im not sure if its a real cactus trigger, it looks just like it but with no cactus on it...but im having a problem. I thought they would work with either a canon or nikon, and there isn't a specific model for the specific brands, or am I wrong? Do I have to sync something? Nothing goes off when I push the test button on the transmitter. If I plug in the sync cable the flash will go off when I push test, but it won't fire if take a picture when it's connected. Am I missing something?

I bet you had your D80's built in flash up, didn't you? Or were you in TTL mode instead of manual?

Actually the little cheap battery that came with it was wrapped so tightly I didn't even notice it was wrapped haha
