If you can make out each individual square/shade you're monitor is "ok". If the squares/shades run into each other... You need adjustment.

Take the time to read through this page if you can. It covers calibration well and includes test charts for color as well as gamma and black level. Hope this helps.

Whats this about?

It's showing 3 calibrated versions of the same shot. The right side (closer to grey) is calibrated by eye on Bitter's computer screen. That looked - to him on his screen with his eyes to be white.
However the other two segments show the results of his experiments with hardware based calibration methods - showing that what he was seeing was grey and not white. It can take alittle work to get perfected but it shows the fact that hardware based screen calibration is the only way to go if you want a properly calibrated screen.

What about color?

I'm color deficient... Meaning that colors that are similar to each other often (not always) blend together.

So I don't feel confident enough to comment on how to calibrate for color and feel that the information I'm giving is accurate.
