Camera recommendations

I am about to study abroad in Italy and I want something better than my iphone to take pictures on that is also compact and easy to throw in a purse. What is the best compact camera I can get for this purpose that will give me nice quality photos of my trip but is in the $100-$200 range?

I think in the $100-200 dollar price range you will not find a lot that is better than your iphone. For $400 you could get a Canon PowerShot G9 or something similiar. My To-Go camera if I want to go really light is a Canon DSC-RX100.

Modern iPhone cameras are actually pretty good and it's hard to find a budget camera that compete with most any modern smart-phone camera.

The camera market is evolving as a consequence... companies aren't offering as many point & shoots but there is still a market for some niches... such as point & shoots with long zoom (something smartphone cameras typically don't offer.) There's still a bit of a market for some "advanced" point & shoot models, but those tend to start at around $400 and go up from there.

If you just want to record your experience in Italy, your phone will do nicely. If you consider yourself an amateur photographer (such as myself) and you want to make better photographs, then I'm afraid you'll have to spend a bit more than $200.

Maybe Canon G15, small and has all functions of DSLR but on a smaller sensor.

Just use your phone and spend the $200 on a nice meal in Italy
