Are you shooting from land only or will you be shooting from the ocean as well?
From land , I have a Nikon d 7500 with an 18-300 mm lens, the video quality is ok but the autofocus seems to be searching while I’m recording, anyways I’m leaning towards Sony alpha series and maybe a 70-300 mm , just not sure which alpha for best results and not to break the bank, thanks so much

..... and as @alan also asks - where will you be shooting from?

However, the lens is more important than the camera - as the lens 'gets you out to the surfer' whereas the camera simply records the view. Yes I well realise that the exposure settings are important too!

I do heaps of surfing shooting using my walk-around Lumix FZ-300 with its 24x zoom lens. Whether I am on the beach or on a local headland close to the action, I have a shooting distance from 75-metres to 200-metres

Shutter speed is critical - anything below 1/1000 shows movement

ps- the Lumix FZ-300 lens is a 24-625mm in FF terms (18 to 435 in dSLR terms) and all built into the ready-to-go camera

Hope this helps
Phil

For video I’ve heard that the Sony is the shizzle. When I’ve shot video with my old D90 I was not happy with the focus either, started using manual focus.

I can't answer to the A6700 which I would bet is amazing but I had the A6400 for a while and it was great for video.
