    Looks like a lens......... apparently with the elements removed.

    Would it be a telescope rather than a camera lens with that ring on the side that could be for a finder scope?

    Don't think so; the scale is marked in feet up to 100 before it hits infinity. This implies some sort of "zoom" capability. I'm wondering about something for surveying? Can we see the inside and the mount(s)?

    hmm good point. So then perhaps the side ring is there as a kind of gun sight that lined up with another on the camera itself for some kind of sports or perhaps military situation.
