The other downside is that I have to use my digital lens and presets on the camera with that flash so I am also at the mercy of the camera on that note.

The worst part of the photos is something completely in your control which is the light..

Sorry bud.. same problem here.. an obvious silhouette should speak for itself. Here I am squinting at the screen trying to figure out which way she is facing and what that thing is protruding from the right side of her body. Shooting a photo like this *could* work, but i'm afraid this is beyond your current skill set. I suppose you could have saved this shot with a large reflector to your right to fill (not to mention her in a different pose). The other option would be to give up the ocean, and stand with the sun behind either your left or right shoulder. Keep shooting!!

There's an important concept here that people often have a hard time getting over which is: Just because something looks nice, doesn't mean pointing a camera at it makes for good photography. I'm trying to think of a good analogy, but this one will have to do instead: If you think of photography like Facebook.. your photo is like a "check-in" whereas a good photo would be a 100 word description. It conveys nothing more than you stood there and said: "whoa, look at the cool sky" and then took a picture. Here, maybe this will help: Composition in Photography: Top 10 Mistakes – Camera Zombies!

Don't give up though, this is one of the easiest things to get over and once you realize it, it will improve your photos drastically. Keep shooting!

I think you got some good feedback on here but what do you think about the shots? Why did you shoot the pictures? What were you going for and why? How do you feel about your lighting and composition? It's amazing what we already know if we really sit back and think.

as i stated above. i was mostly testing out the "crap" flash i purchased from wallmart, I am fully aware that the lighting is "a joke" and i have been trying to stay away from cfl's and other lighting and using natural lighting for my photos.

I feel a little discouraged that seemingly all the photos i have posted for a review have gotten almost all negitave feedback, however its what i plan to do with that feedback that will make or break me.

I have just gotten done reading an old book called the guide to 35mm. in there i have learned quite a bit.

I will look through some of my other photos at home and post up more on here that i think may have been beter. in fact i have one or 2 on dropbox of a waterfall that i believe are a little better "as far as what everyone on here is looking at"

i will post that pic in a few..

thank you again to everyone i dont mind the negitave like i said i plan to use all feedback to better my skill sets esp. considering i want to start my own business doing this. i need to know what i need work on.

Don't be discouraged, the last thing you want is to find a "photography" forum with a bunch of mediocre to awful "photographers" all stroking each others egos (there are plenty out there).
Check out "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson and look for his adorama videos on youtube.

Thank you manual. I saw a book at the store yesterday on lighting and as soon as I can afford it I will be getting that and possibly a not her book on the basics of digital photography. I think that some of my issues may be based on I am so used to film that I don't truly understand iso. Wb. And how to get them all to work together in sync for what I am trying to do. I have really relied on my d50's auto settings for far too long and only now getting into using manual mode.
