He didn't buy the crappy camera. His uncle bought it for him to practice and was expecting professional photos with it.

Except his uncle got mad at him without even looking at the photos... so there's something we're not privy to at play here as well.

Sounds like he should be on the Dr. Phil forum instead of the photography forum.

Well in the right hands it's amazing what a iPhone camera can do....I saw a music video made almost entirely with an iphone camera and it looked great. However if someone knows what they're doing (not me *yet* but working towards it) obviously a good DSLR will do even better and perhaps more importantly be able to handle more situations than an iPhone. Finally, as we all know a DSLR allows the user to shoot raw thereby providing more flexability in post.

your phone is smart while your camera relies on you to operate it and you may not be as smart and an inanimate object with a hard drive and artificial intelligence.
