Hi, new to owning a higher end camera, I would like to take portrats and shoot my daughters v-ball games and b-ball games. I have the cheaper 18-135 and 85-200 with the higher f stop. Any thoughts

Get a 50mm 1.8 or a 85mm 1.8 ( about $400 ). Of course thats just assuming the vball games will be in a school gymnasium where you will be rather close but need a faster lens due to the lighting. You could also go for a 70-200 2.8 IS but then you are looking at around $2300.

The 50mm seems cheap have seen them for around 100 dollars and some rate it ok other say it really cheap.

Yeah, its cheaper, but not as good of a lens. Plastic build, lower quality optics, not quite as fast, no USM focus. I actually meant to say the 50mm 1.4.....but if you need to save money the 50mm 1.8 would work as well.

The 85mm is very nice for the price. As long as you aren't in super tight spaces. Its better than the 50mm because it has a true ring USM as opposed to the micromotor USM that is in the 50mm 1.4 ( so to spare you the details, it focuses faster ). Its also a very nice portrait length especially for headshots. Most people go with the 50 because on a crop-sensor body, 85mm is sometimes to tight if you don't have the option to back up.

What's your budget? The lens I'd recommend is twice as much as your camera, so it depends on your budget.
