Canon AF problem

You focus and recompose McCrackus. Do a little reading on focus points and you will learn the center point is the most useful. It detects contrast both horizontally and vertically, while the outer points will only do one or the other, but not both. The manual should discuss this, and it might vary with the grade of camera.

Yes you can have issues with focus and recomposing with narrow depth of field.

Yeah, that's typically why I avoid it (in these dark venues, I almost always shoot at 1.8), but I'll give it a shot especially in light of the issues my lens has been giving me recently. Thanks!

Didn't realize you were using single point and not center point. As far as focus and recompose, you can kinda figure out beforehand whether or not it'll work. How far are you on average from your subject? Punch that into a DOF calculator and see what you get. If DOF is less than a foot, and there's only an a couple inches in front, it may result in a lot of deletes. If your 15' or so, you've got significantly more, and it becomes a useable option.

I'll do some experimenting. Unfortunately, the dimmer venues are also usually the smaller ones. I'm sometimes 3-5 feet from the subject if I'm at the front of the stage.
