Canon and Nikon lens question

I have to say that 70-200mm thermos from Nikon looks rather good!

As for the backwards compatibility - how many new people to photography are buying the older lenses? Most I see are getting brand new (budget or pro) series lenses rather than going for older glass - unless they already happen to have a nikon glass collection or inherit one.
I think it was certainly a big factor closer to the time when canon changed all their mounts, but now I've met few people lamenting the fact that they can't use FD mount glass.

And I'm always surprised that Nikon doesn't have a denotion for their pro series lenses - certainly from a marketing perspective it must help drive sales for canon on expensive lenses just with the L notation (ignoring the whiteness which is only on the longer telephotos anyway).
If I were after a pro grade nikon lens all I could say is "give me the one with the biggest price tag" whilst canon you can say "I want L grade!

While we are on the subject, I've gotta ask. Why does canon make their expensive telephotos white? it's possibly the stupidest looking thing I've ever seen, and it screams "I'm expensive, steal me!!" Plus, white lenses, with black hoods and zoom/focus rings are just plain ugly imo.

The official argument is that the white colour reduces the amount of heat they attract during the day from the sun and thus they remain cooler - which reduces the effects that temperature change has upon the metals and optics (metal expands in hot conditions).

That and its a marketing move - when you see a whole field of white telephoto lenses at the Olympics or sports grounds it does masses for your publicity without having to spend a penny to do it.

As for theft - any big lens be it white or black is a target. Thieves are in two rough sorts - the preplanned who will know their target market and will know the lens make and model no matter what its colour (steal or order and the like); and the opportunists thief who can't care less what it is save that its big, looks expensive and that you have it and they don't

Well, now that canon dslr's are being used for video pretty much everywhere, alot of low budget videographers who don't need autofocus or metering would love to use old primes.

My best friend is in that exact position right now: trying to find sharp, cheap, used primes for his t2i for shooting video. He has no need to autofocus, metering, or zoom. There are alot of people in the same boat right now, who are hating canon for changing mounts.

For photos though, I'd agree that there isn't much use for old lenses unless your a landscape photog on a tight budget

Gotcha, that makes sense. I stand by the fact that they are hideous though.

I agree. Hideous. However, I would love to see an actual all white camera system. I mean really white. Not the off-white cream that Canon glass is. I mean white like premium printer paper. I think that would be fairly interesting. White camera, white glass, white everything. I think that would be kind of interesting to see how they worked that out.

Looks like I got all the pro level zooms "correct," though, except for the ancient 80-200 AF-D. But for all intents and purposes, it's a consumer zoom nowadays. Build quality is excellent, though. AF speed and wide open performance... not so much.

I have the 80-200 2.8 AF-D and I think the performance at 2.8 and AF speed are very good. I believe they work very well, even for sports. :er:
