Canon G9 vs Canon PowerShot S5

I need some advise/recommendation...I am looking to buy a new photo camera. I am a complete amateur with great ambitions to explore the world of photography, so I haven't had much exposure to different cameras. I made so research and found out that most web-sites recommend either Canon G9 or Canon PowerShot S5...

I don't really know what are their differences, except that one is a bit more expensive. My budget is around $500. Which one should I get?

Have you thought about a DSLR like a Rebel XT this model is around your budget and for me it's a lot better that the powershots but again just a taught.

Depends on what you want, They are all great cameras, Id say if you want more of a PnS, stick with the G9, if you want a DSLR, go with an XT. The S5 would be in between the two. Go play with all 3 and decide.
