Canon pic ID question

I am pretty new on here and was wandering if there is a way to change the "label" that my camera gives each pic. (example IMG_001) The reason I ask is my father in law uses a Canon also and has taken a bunch of pictures for us on that are on my computer. I try to keep my digital photos in one spot to make it easier for my wife to navigate. Can I get my camera to name them different so I don't have to rename the photos to put them in the same file, as they have the same name as the ones I already have on my computer from my father in law. If not, I can make a new folder no problem but my wife still has problems if she tries to upload them to print somewhere and it tells here they are named the same.

Should be in your cameras settings for Folder and File arrangement.

From what I read in the book and when I looked in the camera I can change if the numbers continuous or not but not the format in which they show up on my computer will be the same.The IMG_### will always be there unless I am reading something wrong.

I don't think I can change the numbering system on my Canons either.

Why don't you just do a batch rename before you drop them into the folder?
