Canon Vs. Penax

I need some input on which camera i should purchase. I use to have Canon Mark I 5D before is got stolen, I absolutely loved that camera, just did't like the price new on it! So I have been currently trying to decide between to purchase a Canon 5D Mark 2 or a Pentax K-5 or K-5, i do not know much about Pentax but I have had a bunch of professional photographers recommend them. I main shoot about 25 cars shows a year with usually 250 - 1000 photo taken at each, plus i do some private photo shoots too which is probably about 3 - 5 a year with about 1000 - 2000 photo taken. And then I probably average another 15,000 photo through out the year in all conditions from insanely hot, to serve thunderstorms as well as big nor easter snow storms.

So now I have kinda let you all in on the abuse a camera of mind would take, which one would you recommend and why?

I have to say if you absolutely Loved your Canon 5D Mark 1. Then you clearly need to go with Canon again?? If you love the way a camera works and operates and you love the images it provides you with, it would be silly to even look at another brand IMO. The Canon 7D is the best built Canon in the lower price segment but you don't get a full frame sensor ofcourse! The 5D Mark II is probably the sort of thing your looking for, but the build quality and weather sealing are suspect to say the least. Perhaps the 7D is what you need?

If your original 5D survived in those conditions before without much trouble then chances are you've learnt to look after it well in challenging conditions and the 5DMII wouldn't be a big difference from that (build quality improves but its not a rugged camera design). The 7D mentioned above would give you better weathersealing, but it lacks the fullframe sensor that you are used to working with; and if the 5D didn't die on you there isn't any reason to think that the 5DMII would.

The other option is to consider older 1D line fullframe or even 1.3 crop bodies - far more rugged in their build quality than the 5D and that might be the deciding factor for you. I don't know the 1D second hand market well enough, however, to make any good suggestions so I'll leave that open to others to hopefully point you in the right direction.

Only reason I suggested the 7D was because the OP is thinking of a Pentax K5 which dosen't posses a full frame sensor either, I think the 5D mark II would be his best choice in terms of IQ. But obvious you have to take care with protecting it compared to a 7D.
