Car/motocycle pictures *new member*

Hello, My name is Mitchell.

I started photography about 2 years ago, or around the lines of that. And got out of it, now getting back into it.

Now I haven't fully used my camera to it's limits and want to learn how to.

Quite sure, next few days I will be riding with a few friends on our motorcycles and they want me to do video's with my Gopro and Pictures with my Nikon D90.

Now the issue is, what should I be looking at for settings or what's a good mode for it? We will be doing a lot of still shots, but will be doing a lot of shots with me in a car photographing them driving.

(also looking to make a banner for my photos, new to photoshop, do not like using it but have to sometimes, so need a banner for my pictures!)

There is no one 'motorcycle' setting or mode that works. It's more understanding what adjusting the various settings do to your images and how to adjust them to get the results you want.

After you've read and re-read your camera's manual fully, go here and start at the top and work your way down.

Yep tirediron gives a good link to start. Hope you weren't expecting learning it all just for the trip? As I shot and learned daily over the course of weeks,months and years.

But you can make some great images on P program or Auto mode will give you the most consistent keeper rate. Or learn about S (Shutter) and A (Aperture) modes can also be used to great effect once you have a general understanding of how Shutter Speed,Aperture,Iso and Depth of field work in concert in creating the image.

I don't plan on learning on a tip, and knowing everything. It takes countless amount of photo's to know what to do and what you are looking for.

I'm just asking is there anything you guys could show me on, maybe to angle the car/bike better or anything along the lines of that. Anything and everything helps!

I plan on spending the next few weeks working my bike for the right photos I want.

And I agree, I need to learn more about Aperture and shutter speed correctly so I can do many other things.

Shutter speed is going to be your most important setting. Learning panning will help also. A fairly narrow aperture would help some, but unless you are shooting in full sun that's probably not all going to happen.

I plan on sunset still photos on the beach and move onto the highway during the day for driving photos, which I think will be the harder of sets to shoot.

The guys I ride with, they like going for long rides. So should be set.

The manual isn't really going to be a whole lot of help. You need to learn a WHOLE LOT in a real short time. The manual will tell you what the functions are on your camera, but not how to use them properly to get the result that you want. There are entire libraries written on how to get what you want properly because it won't fit in the space allotted to the manual.

I don't race them but I love to photograph them when they are racing. I sometimes ride out the Natchez Trace Parkway and just pick a spot and shoot motorcycles as they come through. I can do that for hours.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that there is no magic setting that will work. It's about using your camera properly. It's about understanding light and how to use it to your advantage. I know there's no secret setting, All I'm looking for is tips that's about it.

Though I don't have any camera, I can still give you little advice. Go outside, and take pictures of speedy cars on the road, Choos different settings each time and then go for what you like the most. Now that wasn't the thing I made this post for. Just to let you know, I've been now using gimp for over a year, it's a Photoshop like software. If you need any help for your banner, I'll be always there to help you :blushing:
