I recently went to the parc and I brought my camera to try and make some interesting pictures. I need to improve my skills so tell me anything I did good or bad. I have the basic 18-55mm that comes with the Rebel T1i.

It was very cloudy and the end of the day so the iso is a little high.

1/30, f/4.5, iso 500

I think the idea behind #1 has the most potential, but too much tree trunk and not enough slide.

# 2 If it isn't something you yourself would want to spend time looking at, why photograph it? Do you really stare at moss on the side of trees? Besides the fact that the moss itself is a bit OOF, and the DOF is probably too short here.

# 3 Well probably the best thing you did here was to get to ground level to make the composition at least somewhat interesting. You cut off the left side of the plant and violated rule of thirds on both axes. The background isn't crazy appealing (is that a storm drain or a tunnel)?

I know it's a new camera so you're probably thinking the last thing I want to do is spend more money but a 50mm 1.8f is a very cheap lens and it will help greatly with keeping your ISO down. That being said 500 isn't all that high... I also try to never get as low as 1/30, maybe sometimes dip to 1/100 but prefer 1/200-1/500(action) if it is hand held which again the larger aperture lens helps a lot.

Thank you both for your input!

Rotanimod: I agree with you on #1. I will try to go back and take another one. On #2, I also agree that the moss is out of focus but I actually look at moss on trees. Maybe I am a bit weird! #3, the background metal thing is a diving springboard. I really wanted to get a picture of that abandoned pool but the area was locked. I was trying to not cut the side of the plant but there was crazy winds up which made it challenging!

Shootermcgavin: It's funny you mention it because it was my birthday yesterday and my boyfriend got me that lens (was on my wish list). I am very excited to go outside and shoot with it. I tried it a little bit yesterday in low lightning and it's fantastic already! Will post new pictures in a couple of days.

If you could have gotten the slide in focus that would be a lot better photo. Second photo: what were you trying to shoot? Third photo: nice on the brush though the back is way blurry

The background in the 3rd image is suppose to be blurry. It's meant to isolate the subject.
