I want to get into portrait photography and have been working on perfecting my style for the past few years. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to make this picture better.

This is definitely a very good start - great expression. A couple of suggestions: (1) Open up a little bit so that you have all of his head in the image (2) A reflector on the right side (his left) to elimate the shadow and dark spot, (3) a diffuser on the left (his right) to reduce the bright spot, and (4) a light homogenous background to eliminate the minor distractiosn. All in all though, a very nice image, with just a few, IMHO, small tweaks to improve it.
