Choosing Lenses for my D5100

In theory i have understood the theory (hopefuly), now i have to get myself a flash (though it wont be a fancy one, most likely a SB400) and try out the theory in practical.

MTVision thank you for ur note about the shutter speed on my D5100, i just discovered that last night, :thumbup: . anyways if the theory works as its supose to, then who needs a 1/20000s speed (May be me when i have saved a few thousand dollars ).

I wouldn't buy the sb400. I would buy the sb700. The d5100's built in flash can't act as a commander for other off camera flashes. The sb700 is more money but it can act as a commander on camera if you ever get more flashes and want to take advantage of Nikons wireless lighting system. It'll be worth the extra in the long run Im sure.

The SB400 isn't all that much more poweful than your built in flash and it can only move from straight forward to straight up. Besides the extra power, with the SB600 or better, you can point the flash up, to the side, behind you, etc. This allows you to bounce your flash off suitable surfaces and control the direction the light is coming back at the subject.

It makes a big difference.

your advice is highly apreciated, but there are a few things avoiding me from buying any other (other than the SB400) flash:

-I live in Iraq and in the city i live in ( which is: Karbala ) there are actually only two shops selling photography equipments (actually it was only one shop "A", and he had a worker who used to work for him, and when he [i.e trhe worker] learned the ins & outs of the business, and saved some money, he opened shop "B"), and i only found one (single) SB400 displayed on a roof in the shop "B", (( what am trying to say is that there arent too many options here)).

- I currently cant put so much budget for flash light, (assuming i find a way to put my hands on a fancier flash), specially that am gona be a father (if God wishes) in a few months (after five years of marriage ), (( what am trying to say is that i have to start saving my money as much as i can )).

- I am very new to photography, and i think i should learn at least the basics, and get a year or two of experience, and then to think of upgrading my hardware.
