Compensating the right exposure for two different objects in a shot

This is hard to explain because ive forgotten the technical terms but I need to know the correct way to expose say... the moon in a starry sky or exposing for the stars instead of the moon.
 
You have to take 2 shots. One that exposes for the stars, but the Moon will be badly blown out and any stars near the Moon will not be seen because of the Moon's severe overexposure.
Then expose for just the Moon.
Blend the 2 images post process.

Aha i did not know that. Thanks. Theres a setting called 'multiple exposures' but i've never played around with it as i didn't know what it did. Would this help? on a d80
