Composition technique: pattern

Hello,
I'm just learning the techniques of composition and I'd like to have your feedback regarding this image. I tried to capture the light falling on the doors as well as the pattern of the doors. What do you think about the image? Is the composition OK? Or how could I improve the composition?

Overall, I think this works rather nicely for what it is. A couple of thoughts: I would burn in (darken) the very bright areas on the cobblestones as they pull the eye away from the main part of the image. As far as the actual composition, the linear elements of the image form really nice leading lines that guide the eye along the scene, but there's nothing at the end. I think a composition where we could see a little more of the area at the end would help.

I think that improves it, yes. What would really make this a great shot is someone on that bench at the end. Just sitting, reading, or something like that.

Oh, yes; you're right. There was no one around I'm afraid.

When you see that you have some distracting elements or "hot spots" in the frame, start messing with a crop to highlight the areas that you want. Here is what I think you want:

Thanks for that; it really helps. At the moment I'm trying to figure out what these 'distracting elements' are. I'm still at the stage of figuring out what a good photo looks like. Thanks for the help. It looks much better now. I also like the idea of having someone sit on a bench!
