What's new

Contrast: one for C&C

A thread devolving into a "what constitutes a pro" debate. That's so unexpected. Since I already know what everyone is going to say I'll save us all a heap of time and inform you that you are all wrong, I am right and that's all there is to it.

Now, moving on...

I like the pic but can't decide if I like the new shiny bucket or if a more weathered looking bucket (same color but faded like the wall paper) would work better.

I would LOVE to have a weathered one and would prefer that. Ive been looking for one and I saw a wooden one at an antique store. Since it had an "antique blue paint" they wanted $85 for it. Yea... no. Lol

There's this "photographer" I know who can't focus or compose a shot to save her life but people are paying her for her services. Mainly probably because of her cheap rates but some shockingly think she's a good photographer. So Kevin I understand when you say how art can be viewed differently.

I think that has less to do with people's taste in art and more to do with consumer ignorance.

Photography is at an interesting place right now because cameras are cheap, and everyone has one. Most people even realize that their everyday snapshots don't measure up to photos taken by someone with better equipment and more experience (though they may not know why).

So what happens is that any photo that is better than the pictures they take themselves is, "OMG SOOOO GOOD!" It's not a different appreciation of art, it's just awe at knowledge and ability that they can sort of relate to but don't understand. Even out-of-focus, poorly-composed snapshots will garner praise from the uneducated simply because it's better than they could come up with, and they don't know any better.

This phenomenon might also explain NASCAR. I don't know, I'm still trying to figure that one out.

I like the image, however, I wish I could see more of baby. I maybe would have tried to pull her hands out and get her face up more... Right now it is half a face of a baby and an image of a bucket and a nice wood floor..

But for contrast, it is fine.

The term "professional" is typically defined in either of two ways or a combination.

a) someone who is the best at "something" (even art, or lawn mowing)
and
b) someone who gets paid to do something (even art, or mowing)

There is a third way "professional" is defined, and I feel I must point it out since some people have managed to put this thread back on track, and I hate that. It's no longer fun.

A "professional" is also defined as someone holding a degree or journeyman status in a vocation. Doctor, accountant, mason, carpenter, etc.

However, thanks to Kevin, I will be taking my degree from Le Cordon Bleu, as well as any and all of my various certificates, awards, etc., relating to me being a Pastry Chef and burning them. Tomorrow I will go to WalMart and apply for a greeters job. It's the only way I feel I can atone for having allowed myself to live the lie of believing I was a professional.

@Atuspids: You're already hawt enuff to roast marshmallows on.

@Sabrina: Contrast is personal and I'm closer to Manaheim and MissCream, I like more. The shot is very nice, and has enough contrast. Obviously I would like more, but that's my taste.

God... how many times does "what is a professional" come up on TPF?

There is one and only one non-subjective and non-emotional way to define "professional". You get paid for what you do. Period.

If someone hands you $5000 ... or even $.50 ... for your picture... guess what? You just went pro. Congrats.

wix.com is hardly a "website".
and having a website hardly makes you a "pro" .

Hmmmm, when I go to Connecticut Photographer, Connecticut Photography - Sabrina Cameron Photography - Specializing in Newborn, Children, Family, Pregnancy, Maternity, Portrait, and Events (wix.com) I get content and images, without any errors. Does that not constitute a website?

Stop trying to troll.
pot-kettle.jpg

Let me rephrase.
it's not a legitmate, hosted, photography website.
A "pro" photographer isn't going to have a free wix.com domain.
They'll have their own personally designed site, with their own web address.

"shakes head in disbelief"

Actually, manaheim, the gobernant defines it as making positive income, profiting against your deductions for at least three years. If you don't, you are simply a hobbyist.

Even better!

Glad I could be a positive influence on you and your future!
