For what it's worth, I think they are nice compositions but a little under exposed. Perhaps a longer shutter time would have been better, which might have meant you needed a filter of some sort for the lighter areas.

Thanks. They were both at 30". Am i understanding correctly that in order to get longer shutter times i would use "bulb" mode? I have a 60D btw.

You are correct. I think you would also need a shutter release cable.

What else? What ISO and aperture was used? Tweaking any one part will affect the photos, so play around. Bulb mode and then start playing with time. Try to shoot at the lowest possible ISO you have and an aperture that gives you the DoF you want then play with time, increasing it and checking. Or, open up the aperture In increments. You can also try bracketing and then combining for HDR.
