Can anyone recomend a distance learning course in the UK. Possibly City&Guilds qualification to get me on the first steps of the ladder in photography?

To the best of my knowledge there are no distance learning courses in the UK. Certainly not for C&G.
There are one or two distance learning Colleges that you can access. There have been a few threads about them on here so try searching.
You would be better to try finding an evening class at a local College or VIth Form Centre.

Thanks for the information. I know ICS do a course, but its just black and white photography. Looking for something all round. Will try my local college in the new year. Thanks for the info

ICS don't just do black and white they do basic photography C&G too. Amateur Photographer magazine run 2 photography courses http://www.amateurphotographer.com/homestudy/AP-HomeStudyCourse.pdf which is their diploma they do a digital imaging course too.
