critiqued for using "watermark"...?

I know a water mark is not gonna be very effective if they want to use your photo. But I feel it gives it a name and a face and should make the guilty party pause when they know who they gonna steal from. If it has no water mark then they may feel like they just found it on the net and it's finders keepers time

everyone posts some interesting feedback and perspectives.

lol this thread cheered me ups :D

the people on the other forum are clearly bitter folk. the pic youve posted is gorgeous - i just stole it.

lulz.

My $00.02 worth? Watermarks offer only slightly more than zero protection. They're easily removed by anyone with even a moderate amount of skill. Are they bad? No, not at all. I think a simple, conservative watermark such as that in the OPs image is fine. Even the most unskilled painter signs his/her work; why should we be any different? The only time I object to watrmarks is when they cover so much of the image that it's hard to see.

thats my perspective, its not like im trying to flaunt

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I probably am... but isn't a watermark something that covers a large part of the image and effectively ruins it for practical use? From what I understand, the image above contains a signature, not a watermark. Also, a watermark, by definition, is 'transparent' for lack of a better word. Something like this... http://www.xaraxone.com/webxealot/workbook39/watermark_10.jpg . And is in fact, quite difficult to remove. Right?

that was my point to him, he said it was a watermark, i said it was a signature. i dunno :er:

Op's watermark is fine to me, its small and out of the way, i just get annoyed at the giant ones across the whole photo that kill the image.

I have seen photo's stolen watermarks removed and the company who stole its water marks added all over the photo.

Take what people say on the net with a grain of salt. Some hate water marks and some don't. I seen water marks that would make grown men cry and others that are pretty cool. It depends on the size and design. It can be a small level of defense against someone using your photo without permission. Or it can be used as promotion. Just do what makes you happy and what you feel looks good. It will change over time that's for sure.

Cool avatar Heck, can I have it:evil:

:lmao:

As far as the op's watermark, its simple small and looks good.

Watermarks are a form of copyright protection. Now will they stop people using your images without your permission? No. But if you catch them and you can see they have removed your watermark then you can sue their pants off because they have broken copyright laws. Will you bother doing this, in most cases probably not.

Just because you are an amateur photographer doesn't mean that people are free to publish your work as they please. Copyright Law applies to amateur & pro alike.

Sure but skull head is shooting a Nikon. You would have to change the camera

There is a difference between a signature and Watermark.

A watermark should make a photo practically useless a signature does not.

To each their own, they are both fine to use. I like stealthy watermarks. Low opacity overlay in multiple areas of the photo. That way they make the image easy to see but still protect it to a degree.

People get all snobby about who can and can't use signatures or watermarks, or whether you should use them at all. Do what you like to do, and to hell with everyone else.

Here, Here!

It's a gourgeous shot! My husband said in order to not allow people to steal the shot from the net... you basically need to use flash, then they can't right click.
I'd steal it to if you didnt mind :sexywink:
