Hi.
I have recently bought a second hand D3000 Nikon. I've also bought a Nikon DX VR AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5 - 5.6G.
I am new to cameras and this is the first I've bought. But I cant manage to get the camera to change focus at all. I've tried it using auto focus, single servo af, continuous af and manual focus. The focus ring in manual doesn't change the focus at all. Every picture I've taken is just blurry. Is it something I'm doing or could it be a doggy camera/lens.
Any advice is appreciated
Thanks

Did you push the zoom release button on the side of the lens?

suggest to read the manual, it will cover a ton to which can at times be a simple fix and will let you know lens capability.

Noticed your lens is AF-P, the D3000 works with AF-S lenses. You can find the same lens with an internal motor (AF-S version) for like 50 bucks. This is the underlying issue with your setup.

Welcome to the world of photography! It’s great that you’ve got your hands on a Nikon D3000 and the 18-55mm lens. Blurry images can be frustrating, especially when you're just starting out. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Check the Lens Mount: Ensure that the lens is mounted securely on the camera body. Sometimes, if it’s not seated correctly, it can affect focusing.
  2. Autofocus Settings: Since you’ve tried different autofocus modes, make sure the lens is set to autofocus (AF). The switch on the lens itself should be set to AF, not MF (manual focus).
  3. Focus Mode: The D3000 has different focus modes (Single AF, Continuous AF). For still subjects, using Single AF (AF-S) is best. For moving subjects, Continuous AF (AF-C) is more suitable.
  4. Use a Wider Aperture: Sometimes, using a wider aperture (lower f-number) can help with focus, especially in low-light situations. Try setting your aperture to f/3.5 if possible.
  5. Lens and Camera Condition: If the focus ring doesn’t seem to work in manual mode either, there may be an issue with the lens or the camera itself. If you can, try the lens on another camera body to see if it functions correctly. Conversely, if you can borrow another lens to test on your D3000, that would help isolate the problem.
If the problem persists after these checks, it could be worth taking your gear to a camera shop for evaluation.

Good luck, and happy shooting!
