Different Lambency diffuser shapes

Hi, I saw two lambency diffusers with different shapes. One of them is straight up like a cylinder |_|, and the other widens at the the top \_/

What different result would these two shapes create? Which one is better?

just taking a stab at it, hope it won't fire back
But |_| is probably more of a snoot? where light is really directional and your emphasize what you need to. While \_/ is a diffuser, similarly to umbrella, to spread the light onto and around the subject.
