Digital photos got destroyed when imported to mac!

Hi!

My cousin imported over 500 photos from our family trip to NYC. Something strange happened. Just about 40 pictures got imported to the pc, and all of them were partialy covered by a gray solid. All of the other pictures on the camera itself were also mostly covered in gray! All of the pictures seem destroyed! Please help, since it is really importand that I recover these pictures! Any help would be greatly appriciated! Btw, in my Sony handycam there are a folder called "trashes". Is it possible to recover the photos from there? For some reason it doesn't work to upload pictures here on the forum. Says "undefined".... You can se the examples here:

unless you deleted the photos from the memory card (and even then) it's not likely anything is destroyed. Can you try to upload again?

Thanks for the reply! I have re-uploaded, but the images are still damaged. They are even damaged when i view them on the camera itself...

First and foremost.... do not do anything to the card. Do not reformat it, do not take any more shots.... leave the card as it is.

Try using some recovery software. Chances are, the images are intact, it's just the file on the card that tells the camera/computer where the images are has gotten corrupted.

ahh, I had a camera that was doing the same thing, every 3rd or 4th shot was black bars....it's been recycled

Most probably it's because you don't know what you are doing with the software.

Learn the software and you'll be be fine.

It's really frustrating! Thanks for the help so far But, do you know if recovery programs can fix it?

I was able to recover data from a card that had been repeatedly formatted but I suspect the data on your card is corrupted and irretrievable....It has nothing to do with the upload if you view the files on the camera the same.

Try more than one program. They might work different, so the results will vary.

Ok, but the pictures were just fine, before the camera was conected to the computer......

OK, just kidding, heh. I have seen this happen before when the computer's memory or ports are bad. Bad memory in the computer (or software in memory that is scrambling the memory) can corrupt a file system when it reads and writes data. Ports, such as the USB port, can corrupt a file system without you intentionally reading or writing to the drive.

The first thing I would do is flip the write protect tab so things can not get worse. Most recovery software can recover to an alternate drive so you can recover images to a folder on your hard drive from the card.

Next, if you have no luck getting recovery software to work, and the pictures are important to you, take the card to someone more experienced. If you do not have anyone local you know who can do it, try a reputable computer repair company.

If none of this works, or you don't care about the images that much, you can try Disk First Aid in your utilities folder (you will have to un-write protect it again first) and see what that can do. You might get lucky and it is just a bad write to the FAT, or you might not and it might completely wipe the card.
