They go from a hard stare down to a strike and back to their original position in less than a second. This shot was one of ten shots taken in that sequence.

I like how you captured the eye, with the fold of transparent skin (I'm sure there is a name for it), that covers and protects the eye affording the bird to still see its prey while its head is under water. Great shot!

It's called a Nicitating Membrane....kind of like a retractable cataract.
