There are 5 schools in our town. (K-1, Pre-k &2-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12) Weird. I know, but I thought that I would do a drawing for "giveaway" for each school. Not asking for money or anything, just an entry form to use for the actual drawing.

My thoughts were it would be good practice for me and 5 families could get new pictures of their kid, for free. I'd do a 45 minute session with each "winner" and then give them a high res CD.

So I called the school today to see if I could send home flyers. They told me to contact the school board. So I did. She said to submit the idea in writing after I'd explained the whole situation. So I did.

Here is what she said:

Your request for permission to send flyers home to our student, did not meet LISD guidelines. LISD is restricted by law and policy in the utilization of our school facilities during the educational day.
Listed below our guideline:

Communications – Flyers (Outside Organizations)
Requirements for Consideration
Flyers must meet the following standards:
• Produced by a non-profit, tax-exempt organization.
• Serve the majority of (Town Name)youth.
• Include the name of the organization sponsoring the service or event.
Approval Process and Access/Distribution
1. Submit a copy of the flyer to the Public Relations Office with a contact name and
number.
2. The flyer will be initialed upon approval (post-only or student take-home) and the
submitter will be contacted.
3. It is the responsibility of the requesting organization to make available copies of the
approved flyer as directed.
To me, I read this as it was turned down because I'm not a non-profit, tax exempt organization, but I also read it as I need to submit an example flyer.

What do you guys get out of it?

I get that you did not meet the very first requirement.

A sample flyer would be a waste of time.

ummmm yea I'm glad for this. I've got enough crap to sort through with my kids bookbags.
Schools are not advertisers.
If you want to do a give away, create a facebook fan page and do a cute kid contest or something like that.

I'm sure they will you buy ad space in their yearbook though, if you want to put a "flyer" in there...

I have tons of stuff in my girls backpack, too. 98% of it asking for money. I'd be happy for a break from the norm and a chance to get something for free. :D

Eh. I dunno. I just thought it would be something nice to do for the holidays. *Shrug*

I understand it to a certain degree, I guess what I really don't get is why she didn't just tell me this on the phone instead of asking me to submit in writing. I told her I wasn't a business, ya know?

Oh well.

My take is simple.

A. They don't know you from Adam.

B. They know you want to take pics at their expense. In other words, captivity.

C. This is being suggested as during the school day for *your* benefit. That's not their agenda.

Here's my hand slap. Don't solicit to schools, they have their own photogs for the standard sanctioned school photos.

Why do you want to go to schools? They are protecting the kids and the parents and IMHO they should..again they don't know you from Adam and you have zero credentials. I'd say no to you too in a heartbeat for what ever reason I had available to me.

Go to colleges and businesses and develop business there if they allow you to do so on school time and school property.

If you want to do something nice, go to a womens shelter, or a young mothers home, by my house we have a crisis pregnancy center, I'm sure there are people there that even though they are struggling financially would still love some family pictures, especially in this economy where many can just not afford pictures, but could in years past...

They know me better than a lot of parents, actually. I'm very active in the school's volunteer program and a member of the PTO. I know what you mean, though.

I'm not sure what you mean at their expense?

This wasn't suggested during the school day. This was suggested to be done not on a school day, actually. The flyer was the only thing suggested be sent home from school. (In other words nothing to interfere with school time.)

I understand most of what you're saying and appreciate your reply.

I did the schools for a few reasons, one because I know a lot of parents donate a lot of money to the school and thought they might like something for nothing. Two, parents like to have holiday pictures of their kids.... they are kids. Three, it's a big reach of the community and I thought it'd give the widest range of people the chance to "win".

I should have been clearer. I did not want to do this photography session on school time or on school property.

This is a really good idea. I will have to see what we have in Beaumont. I know there's nothing here.

Even though you said it would be during school or on the property, schools still have contracts with photogs. So there is probably something in their contract that doesn't allow for flyers of other photogs to be sent out via the schools.

Also you say your not a buisness but to them they may be looking at it as you are trying to start one and using the schools to advertise a new buisness.
