I'm trying to decide on small lens for walking around the park shooting family photos. The 70-300mm is way too big.

What is your current setup, full frame, crop sensor, camera brand and model? It’s hard to offer a suggestion without this information.

It's a Nikon D5600 crop sensor. I'm not looking for a shopping list, just general prefer for this situation. Examples, 50mm prime, 18-55mm zoom or something along those lines. What would you if you only wanted one short lens on the park?

Since you probably own the 18-55, that's the one. It's a good lens.

No I don't own that. I bought the body and lens seperate. I have used that lens on a D3500 that I sent back. I did like it.

From a lens that I’ve owned I’d suggest the 16-85/3.5-4.5 but if I were buying a new lens I’d pick the 16-80/2.8-4. The 16-80 has a cult following and very good reviews, it’s pricey though.

A wonderful all-around, "decent-light" (due to the f/3.5~4.5 max ap.) zoom focal length for a
35mm film or full-frame d-slr, but not very wide on the low end for a DX-sensor Nikon.

I own the first Nikon 24-85mm AF-S lens..This lens is NOT the newer,2012-era VR model. Its biggest drawback is its 24mm bottom end when used o a DX format d-slr. The newer, possibly better, the VR model is obviously, equipped with VR!

Are you looking for something to take family photos/candids or artsy stuff? If you’re going to get time on your own and you’re going to be able to go out there and get some artsy stuff then I’d say something with a mid range zoom. If you’re just looking to take family photos - here’s Johnny with Mickey and here’s mommy and Johnny together, use the 35mm 1.8 or do you self a favor and just use your cell phone and enjoy your trip with your family. My last trip to Disney I ended up leaving my Nikon in our room the majority of the time because I was tired of lugging it around. It’s one of the main reasons I switched over to mirrorless.

Not claiming Any of these are great, but just to give an idea based on Disney and focal ranges.

I picked up a Tamron 18-400mm f3.5-6.3 for family vacations when I wanted to travel light and not mess with a lot of gear. I am getting very good results with it on both a D7200 and D500. You will want to tune it using the Tamron Tap-In for the sharpest possible images. I do carry a 35mm f1.4 in my pocket for low light situations. It is a great walk around lens. You might want to rent whatever lens you are thinking about before buying. LensRentals.com

On a crop sensor, an 18-55 is a great focal range for a walk around zoom, and you probably don’t need a wider aperture for most shots - after all, you usually want to see what’s in the background when traveling, and you’ll have plenty of light during the day. For a wider aperture on a budget, the Sigma 17-50 will give you a similar range. I wouldn’t recommend the 24-x lenses, as you’ll definitely miss the wide end for family photos. I wouldn’t bother with the telephoto range.

In my walk around bag for my D7100, I have a Sigma 10-20, an Nikon 18-55, and a Nikon 70 - 400. The 18-5 spends most of it's time on the camera, it seems to be the most versatile of the bunch. However, there are times when the others are indispensable.

For a single walk around small lens, I'd look at a wide angle lens, You can get a lot of good family shots and include a background which I think you'll want. A fast lens is also useful for inside shots without flash.

I think I'm leaning towards my cell phone for park stuff. That's probably the best thing with zero hassel. I'll take out my camera when we go for walks or if I'm up before everyone else.
