If anything, it's about looking closer at the hegemony of American popular culture; to find out if there's any substance to it, or if it's just as plastic on the inside as it seems to be on the outside.

That might sound very negative, but it's not intended as such. I grew up in Britain (I was born towards the end of the 60's) and now live in Germany, and then as now the traces and influences of American popular culture can be seen and felt all around.

I might put a little series of photos together, with iconic symbols of American popular culture (as seen by me, of course) set in a context where certain questions might be raised, and ideas surrounding them explored.

An example of this might be my photo entitled Bump! Bump Photography Forum

To Be honest I like the original post image the most. Its too clean of a subject matter for the HP5 to work well with it.

I see what you mean. Maybe a film with finer grain or a different developer would clean it up a little, although I quite like how it came out.

Yes, highlights are overdone. But it is, after all, not easy target. Highlights are in zone 8-9, Captain America mostly zone 3. Not much inbetween. Automatic, non matrix exposure system will always try to put predominant zone in zone 5 (famous, or infamous, 18% gray). This scene would required 1 stop more exposure to get better tones on the Captain and to throw highlights back in zone 8. Typical problem of black cat on the snow.

My question is: according to you (the OP)...is the image strong enough also without the OP titling and the words "No superheroes were harmed in the making of this photo."?
Sounds funny with them...but I doubt it has a stand alone strenght by itself.
Don't get offenced by that. I'm strongly against titling and I always think that when words need to be put close to a photograph...that's because the photograph needs help.

I added the humor to show clearly that there was no anti American sentiment involved in this photo, which it might otherwise have been seen as containing. I realized when adding these words that it could be seen as my trying to whip up more interest than the photo by itself could muster, but being clear on the first point was more important.

It's Captain America going under the knife, and that might be interpreted as politically motivated by some.
