Do these photos go well together?

Hey guys,
I am entering a photography contest for my high school, and there is an option to submit a portfolio of 8 to 10 images.
I'm choosing to submit a collection of 9 images that I took in Savannah, GA.
The purpose of this collection is to display the many "personalities" of Savannah, to show the heart and soul of the place.
Here are 9 of the photos that I will compile together:
Do they go well together? Are there any that should be left out? Any further advice on grouping photos into a collection?

Savannah has many interesting characters that express themselves in unique ways.

Horses are a common sight in Savannah.
I feel that this photo evokes a sense of calmness and perhaps a little sadness.

The purpose of this photo is to show what some of the city looks like, but also reveal the sort of "wild side" or "youth" of such an old city.

This photo evokes a sense of romanticism, because I think Savannah can easily be considered a romantic place.

There are many interesting alleyways between old buildings throughout Savannah.

I think these go pretty good togehter, in general I like them a lot. I REALLY like picture 8. How long of an exposure was that shot?

The worst picture by far is picture 9. I would change that out for something else. IMO anyway.

trade out #9 for something with water in it. To me its hard to get the 'heart and soul' of Savannah with nothing with water in it (other than the puddle in #1).

I see your point. The problem is that I live in Atlanta and I was only in savannah for one night so I didn't get a chance to take too many photos. I really wish I would've got an interesting shot of the bridge that crosses the river, but overall I'm very happy with the pictures I took.

ah ok. I think overall they work well and are very good for a student display (or really they're very good for any display).

I like the original #9 more than the candidates for replacement. Though honestly I might just go with 8. The combined visual impact of 8 images is greater than 9 with one weak link.

This is a really great collection. Very cohesive. I actually like the second alley picture you just posted better to replace #9. I like the depth.

IMO, 8's the worst..too whimsical and unorthodox.
For the same reason, 1 & 2 also are borderline.
You could revisit both 1 & 2, allowing for more context in-shot.

I realize your point, but I wanted to avoid taking the "postcard" shots that are often seen of Savannah. Thanks for your input though!

As a guy from Iowa and Minnesota, I highly disagree that 1 could by 'anywhere'. Live Oak trees like that may not be especially rare, but it definitely says "deep south" to me. 2 is a very cool shot, and the street light does add an element of place.

A photo essay of a city does not need to be comprised solely of shots of landmarks of that city.
