I calibrate with a Spyder 3, and I do it whenever I'm working on images that I know will go to print. So I'm somewhat what cloudwalker mentionned, in that if the images will be up for print sales or given to a client in prints (or on a DVD for them to print), then I recalibrate. If its a shoot that I'm mainly posting online or for personal things, I usually don't recalibrate.
I bought my Spyder 3 Pro for about $80. I wanted one, didnt really NEED one, but then saw a special going by on a website and bought it for cheap. I think they go like $170 or so. I like the pro because it has an ambient light control thingy in the front.
