Do you carry around an old compact camera?

Hi folks

I found a Canon Powershot A570. A mighty 7 megapixel camera from 2007 and decided to try it out as a carry around camera rather than my phone. It is very popular these days to use a phone and I think almost fashionable. How many photography magazines have pictures from iphones (and more often than not, no other brand of smart phone) on their pages or how often do pictures win competitions this way too. I think it has a lot to do with the mild shock value of being able to create a masterpiece without having a separate tool for the job but something you already have on you. It does tend to wear thin a bit though.

The reason for having the little canon with me in my bag is simple. It beats my smart phone in a number of ways: far more ergonomic (it's an actual camera after all), better IQ, optical zoom, optical viewfinder, full manual control and much larger jpeg images which means cropping is not out of the question. The only downside is it gobbles batteries. Anyway, someone out there using an old compact over a phone? And for similar reasons?

Larger files, variable angle of view, easier to aim and snap, still fits in my pocket, uses AA batteries available everywhere (now using rechargeable ones).

I don't even carry a cell phone that has a camera.

If I'm going to carry a camera I carry a DSLR, usually with a 24-85 mm f/2.8-4 zoom lens on it that also has a 1:2 macro capability from 35 mm - 85 mm.

Not old but different. A Canon SX60HS for similar reasons as OP. The beat camera is the one you have.

there are small pocket size cameras that are better than smart phones (hint: mirrorless)

I carry around a little Rollei 35 with me most times. Nice and compact and the lens collapses to make it even more portable. No batteries required I will take more documentary type photos with my phone, but if I come across a scene that needs a more "artsy" treatment, I pull out the Rollei.

I have and use the Canon a590. I bought it new years ago. It never has collected dust.

I have a blast with it at the ice rink. I snap pics of the kids skating while skating myself. Something I probably wouldn't do with an slr. I have a tendency to fall pretty hard sometimes.

Olympus Pen S half frame camera with me as well.
