... a spotlight type of effect?

I've been searching around online for inspiration, but I'm not quite finding what I'm looking for.

Part of me thinks this could be accomplished with a DIY snoot of some sort, but I'm not sure.

Thoughts?

If you just want the spot of light, a snoot will do the trick. Use a paper towel roll or some such so that you get a circular spot... If you want that spotlight cone effect maybe try incense smoke in the air? Atmospheric effects like that are easier to see if you shooting toward the light as well

Are you wishing to actually see the spotlight or rather the ray of light? A snoot or grid would be my first thoughts. If you're wanting to see the ray of light, try backlighting either smoke or fog with a grid. A snoot may be too narrow of a beam.

A snoot sounds like my first approach. What/where are you trying to light?

I want to do a shoot with my ballerina sister before she returns to Mississippi... I have this image in my head that I want to attempt (and will probably fail miserably at  ), where I want to try and stay as late as possible at this one park that has a ... I wanna say "pavilion" but that's not the right word, haha... an outdoor stage... with a covering... that's always there... know what I'm talking about? Anyway... I want to shoot as late as we can before we get kicked out and try to knock out most/all ambient light, and use the strobe to kind of spotlight her "dancing" from above.... if that makes sense?

Sorry, back to the original question?

I'm not so concerned with the *ray* of light, so much as just getting a narrow... yet wide enough... light that lights just her and a tiny bit of the ground surrounding her.

Ahhh... gotcha. I think a snoot might be too narrow for that; how about a set of barn doors?

Yeah, I was wondering that... barn doors is an idea. I'd have to figure out how to rig that together, but it's possible.

I was also wondering if maybe if I constructed almost a... cone-like snoot... sort of the opposite of this:

...if that would allow the beam to widen enough, yet stay restricted enough to get the effect I'm going for? that' might be a totally stupid idea  I'm just brainstorming "out loud".

If you're not going to get much heat from the strobe (ie, not using the modeling light), try a flat, thin sheet of plastic. Placemats come to mind. Duct tape, cloths pins, chip clips,..... make it work on the cheap.

...do do what exactly? Make a snoot?

That's not a smartass question... I'm being serious... I'm not entirely sure to what you are referring.

Yes, to make a snoot. Roll it up into a cone and clip it. Cloths pin, chip clip, campers clip, duct tape.... whatever will hold it. After all, it's only needed for one shoot, isn't it?

Oh... well I know how to do that, haha. I guess my question was more along the lines of "what DIY light modifications do you think would be able to achieve this effect?"

Sorry... that was my fault for being unclear.

Duct tape is about as DIY as you can get. Just ask Uncle Red.

I meant what light modifications should I *emulate* during my DIY process...
