New snakeskin time is my guess - looks like part of the tail pulling along through the larger section of the scales that have already been shed.

That's exactly what it is! Too bad the skin did tear at some point, so I threw it away and didn't keep it.

By the way, this is one of the first photos taken with my new camera and new lens.
Camera performs a lot better at higher ISO than the old one does (light was low).

Dedicated macro lens is something to hope for - all I could afford at this time was the Canon 24-105mm 1:4 L
I wanted to get myself a good walk-around lens for "all purposes", though I feel this one's somewhat limiting, too, as the 24mm are not as wide as you'd expect with a crop sensor. Ah well...

Ahh I've got that lens on my "to get list" for a walkaround - at the moment the only lens below 70mm that I own that isn't a macro is my kit lens that came with the 400D (18-55mm). A good lens certainly - and whilst 24mm might not be quite as wide it gives you a good excuse to play around with panning and stitching shots
