DONATING 35mm Camera w/ 55/1.4 & 28/2.8

I believe the 50mm is actually similar to a Chinon 55/1.4. If this is true this is a pretty highly sought for lens, priced between $150-300 on ebay.

pix - what color is the rear element coating of the 55?

Man....I have totally Fubar'd this donation by not checking that camera better.
have to see what the wife thinks. I think though, at this point, its pretty safe to say that anyone looking at this stuff should be wanting the lenses to adapt to something else, or already has a camera with the m42 mount.

color? of the glass? im not sure what to be looking for. you cant tell from any of the pictures?

I'm not seeing the rear element of the 55/1.4. Hold the glass up and look at it under diffused light at an oblique angle.

I'm just trying to establish if this is the same lens as the Chinon that I am seeing go for $300+. If it is, the rear element will have a blue hue to it's coating.

im not sure i would call it "blue" like a royal blue color...it almost looks kinda like a cross of purple-ish and blue to me...maybe its just the angle.

hmm. well in THAT case, this lens is TOTAL GARBAGE.

Those Royal Blue-purplish Chinons? They have a tendency of exploding into flames, sending radioactive glass flying everywhere. In fact, they use a mix of high pressure radon and propane between the elements (all of which are doped with plutonium). Truly a terrible design.

In fact, you really need a special permit to handle one. You're in luck. Because I just so happen to have a federal Toxic Optical Materials Handlers' License.

You should just give it to me. I'll dispose of it properly so that nobody is tempted to use it. Really, I'd be doing you a service.

:)

I kinda figured it was one of those lenses nobody wanted...to many moving parts on it. focus ring, aperture ring, M/A switch. what a pain in the ass. seriously..who wants to mess with all that crap?

Wait. It has an M/A switch?

I am fairly certain now that this is a rebranded Chinon. It's impossible to say 100% sure.

i was pretty sure it was a re branded Chinon when I write the original post. :D
I just have ZERO clue what difference it makes to anything. Its still listed as part of a gear donation so...
"what" it is isn't overly relevant to me since im "giving" it away.

but yes...it does have a M/A switch like my mamiya/sekor lenses do.
plus, i have Zero interest in adapting it to our nikon cameras. already have a nikkor 50mm f/1.4
and i know next to nothing about these older lenses. I just hate to see camera stuff sitting around collecting dust and rotting away.

i know the camera body is, and likely the lens is, but not necessarily. It shouldn't make any difference optically, only value-wise.

Kind of like how a Rokinon 35/1.4 is $100 more than the same lens with Vivitar or Bower printed on it. There are some Minolta lenses that are Tamron copies, but they are rumored to have different coatings, and demand slightly more than the original.

But I doubt that's the case here.

If someone gets the glass, I still want the body. :)

I'll make a pinhole camera out of it.

well, all of this is very interesting, but purely academic. I offered this stuff for free, so I will let it ride. what good is a man if he cannot be honored by his word. I AM going to change the criteria slightly, which is allowed by written notice in the OP. (IF you read the whole thing) I am no longer going to consider this a donation as a film starter kit since i really don't think the body is in good enough shape for it. (not 100% certain obviously, but enough for me) This is now a two lens donation, with a body thrown in for parts or repair. I would like to see them go to a home where they will get used. IF the body can be used/fixed, that will just be a bonus. if you only want one of the lenses, please say so and i will start a new donation thread for the remaining lens afterwards. If you want one or both of these lenses, please post IN THIS THREAD your intentions for the lens, what camera you will adapt them for (or if you have a camera they will mount to) and what you want to use the lenses for. again, I apologize for the complete cluster#@%! i have made of this donation. hopefully this will not turn into a complete debacle. As you were, Carry on.

Ok. Well, obviously, I want the 55. It would be a nice addition to my collection. I don't currently have a fast 50 in M42. I am familiar with how to use manual focus/manual aperture lenses, and I appreciate older pieces of kit. I could also take the camera if nobody else wanted it, but I will probably just keep it for the prism and clockwork to use as props.

From the description of the problem with the camera- it sounds like the prism is "desilvering", which looks like dirt when you look through it. This problem is common in Kodak Retina reflex cameras, I replaced the one in my Reflex-S with one from a Minolta. "Dumb-Luck" that t fit.

Hard to believe that a 50/1.4 in screwmount is going for over $50. I picked up a Pentax Super-Tak 50/1.4 for $20 a couple of years ago, with a Black Spotmatic. Gave that one away. Same with Canon 50/1.4's.
