what is it for? Viewing negatives or slides?

mostly. ive heard a few people say they use it for small product photography, but I have not seen any of the results.
possibly tracing as well.
im sure a clever person could think of something.

I have a large light box that's built into a work desk. I used to use it when I did calligraphy for a kinda-sorta living. I could put my paper with the guidelines down first, then the paper I was going to do calligraphy on. That allowed me to keep my lines straight as I worked without having to draw them onto the final paper and then try to erase them without smearing the calligraphy ink.
