I never said the person posting a question about cameras was wrong.

The title of the thread is "Don't ask what camera to buy" NOT "Don't answer questions about what camera to buy." I.e., the poster's is singled out for being at fault. If that's not what you meant, okay, but it's a misleading thread then.

And either way, I want to encourage people to both ask AND answer anyway. Some of the info will be over their heads, yes, but some %age will randomly stick and be useful, sooner or later.

I am very simple, Levi's 590's for casual, car harts for working and dockers for meetings.

Bought the same style of jeans for the last 10 years.

A lot depends on the type of person you are. If you "follow the crowd", then you will probably only consider Nikon or Canon. If you are in to new features and innovations you might consider other brands. If you are buying a camera for 3 years or less, then it may not matter as long as you make good use out of it. Amusing that the same people who claim that it is the photographer behind the camera that makes the big difference in picture quality not the camera, will also claim that they have the best camera.

From a pro point of view all cameras have their good points and bad points and a capable photographer can work around the deficiencies and take advantages of the good points. Like the Nikon 7100, the Sony A77 has some picture noise at ISO 1600. Using the A77 however, it is possible to produce sharp photos at ISO 200 and 1/10 of a second at night handheld, without a tripod. The difference is no flipping mirror to cause vibration on the A77.

Pentax produces great rain, sand, and weather resistant cameras. If that is the type of photography you like to do, perhaps you should look at some of their models.

Even if you are keen on in-camera features, one camera has a simple HDR mode of 2 shots blended together, where another has 2 HDR modes with 3 adjustable shots with or without tone mapping which is also adjustable in camera. Of course if you are just into shooting manual, many features may be irrelevant.

An individualist will generally pick whatever camera fits his/her style and the type of photography he/she expects to do, irrespective of the opinion of anyone else. A status symbol type will pick the camera that suggests that they take great photos, whether they know how to use it or not. Then there are those who in an attempt to save money manage to buy the poorest camera value out there. (They ask for advice but are swayed ONLY by price.)
