This thread proved my point pretty well. Just like it happened in this thread, A topic was posted, many different people posted many different views on whats right and whats wrong. So at the end of it all no one was truly helpful to the original question. That's exactly how it happens in the "what should I buy?" threads, and at the end of it all, there's too many opposing opinions for any of it to do any good.

And to all the "thats how this forum thrives." posts. What a bunch of malarky. This forum isn't going anywhere. its growing every day.

Except that the OP didn't ASK a question. Thus the only possible thing that could have happened was posts that "didnt answer the original question."

OP = either "Opening Poster" OR "Opening Post." I was using it in the latter sense: the Opening Post did not ask a question. It stated an opinion, and thus, it makes no sense to complain about the thread not being helpful to the original "question" that never existed...

That's nice. It still didn't ask a question, and thus the thread still cannot possibly answer the question that wasn't asked.

You're making a ridiculous argument that "This thread just devolved into bickering unhelpfulness" and trying to use that as a case in point. But that's not a valid analogy, because there was nothing to be helpful about in this thread.

I'm not here to feel empowered. I'm here to learn about photography and to share what knowledge I have with people who are newer to the hobby.
For example, by helping them make it through the daunting and nervewracking decision about which camera to drop almost $1000 on when they have no idea what they're doing (I was that guy only a few years ago with college income and very expensive equipment looming before me, and would have appreciated all the advice I could have gotten).

NOT by making them feel like miserable idiots and driving them away from photography by yelling at them when they try to ask for help, and telling them that they're wasting the more important people's time.
If I didn't know better, I'd say that the only reason a person might do THAT ^ would be that they wanted to feel big and powerful and better about themselves at the expense of others. Because it certainly isn't helping out our hobby.

A normal, tolerant, kind-hearted person who doesn't think they personally will enjoy a thread solves the problem in a much simpler way: They don't click on the thread.

And here you are.

Now, how is it "helping them make it through the daunting and nervewracking decision" when you have 3-6 pages of diverse opinions countering each other on what is "a great camera"? It doesn't. I think I made a valid point in a light hearted manner about the information received from posting a broad question on an internet forum. You took symantics to an unprecedented level when you read what you wanted to read from my post, instead of reading what was said.

But hey, thanks for bumping up my post count.​

You've been reading some odd "what should I buy threads" then is all I can say. Possibly the ones where someone asks the "bad question" and is either never asked further questions of them to help refine their point; or they are asked but never reply. As such the thread indeed would resort down to just a fanboy club of suggestions.
Most of the what camera threads I've been in work rather well - when the OP reacts to and responds to the questions they often find that they are far more capable of making a choice themselves and also on starting to understand what the choice involves

Also note that bickering assumes we are arguing or insulting each other; what is mostly going on in this thread is discussion and debate where different parties suggest their own views and also discuss those views raised by others and their own view as well. Sometimes there might be disputes or disagreements - but that doesn't mean that its fallen into bickering.

The only bickering I see in this thread appears to have been started by those who are reporting it.

As I said before... "what camera should I buy" threads are best left to people with patience for answering the same question repeatedly. It's those of us (note I say us-including myself) who do NOT have that kind of patience that generally cause the thread to derail and spiral out of control. Those people should just abstain from even reading those threads.
