DSLR lenses

do you have to buy them for your CERTAIN DSLR?
Each camera has a type of 'mount'...and the lens must match that mount. Canon (auto focus) lenses have and 'EF' mount onto Canon EOS (auto focus) cameras. Film or digital.

Nikon lenses have a different mount, so wouldn't work on a Canon camera.

Some companies like Sigma or Tamron, make lenses with different mounts. So you could buy the lens for either Nikon or Canon etc....but make sure you buy the version with the correct mount.

can you put a 35 mm film slr lens on a digital SLR camera?
Yes, as long as it has the right mount. Keep in mind that most DSLR cameras have sensors that are smaller than 35mm film...so the resulting images will be 'cropped'. Search 'Crop factor' for more info on that.
