I haven't shot crickets, but if I were to shoot them I would use a 100mm f/2.8 IS macro lens.

Down here in the Southeastern U.S., we get grasshoppers called "Devil's Horses"--black with red markings or yellow markings. Suckers will fill up the palm of your hand if you hold one...
