Elinchrom D-lite 4 /PW/Canon 580ex II

Hey everybody,

I just bought my d-lite4 it kit at B&H and can't wait to start using it.

I also have a 580 ex ii with a pair of pocket wizards that i bought some time ago.




Easy question:

Is there any way to combine the strobe and the lights to use them altogether?

Yes, absolutely.

The D-lites have a built-in optical slave, so just fire the 580EX with the pocket wizard, and the studio lights will fire when they 'sense' that a flash has been fired.

Just be aware that if anyone else is taking photos around the studio lights, they might be triggered.

Thanks for the quick reply. Now, is there any particular setup, or the d-lites will pick up the signal?

Have in mind that I haven't used them yet, so I have no clue of how they work.

There are many factors, you will just have to try it and see.

It's possible that if your flash isn't pointed at the studio lights, they won't sense the flash...but if you are in a room, the light will likely bounce around and it's more likely to trigger.

Just make sure that the 580 is in manual mode. When it's on-camera, in E-TTL mode, it will fire a pre-flash that would prematurely trigger the studio lights. *I think* that when it's off-camera with a standard Pocket Wizard, it will fire as if in manual anyway...but it would still be a good idea to just use manual mode to be sure.
