Equipment for a cruise vacation

In April I will be going on a carribean cruise.
My current equipment is

Canon t3i
Canon 18-55is
Tamron 17-50 2.8
Canon 70-300
Canon 50 1.8 mk2
Cheaper tripod with monopod
Canon 430ex flash


My question are

Will I actually need my 70-300?
Should I take the 18-55 and the 50 or just the tamron?

Was thinking I want a small tripod. Something I can through in my normal backpack for beach shots and such? Or will taking a tripod be a waste?

Keep in mind on a cruise your really only on islands during the day so most sunrise and sunsets would prob be from the rocking boat.


Anything else I forgot?

Good morning Bob.. Wife and I are also doing a Carribean cruise also..we're on the Carnival Breeze..
This will be our sixth year to cruise.. Some things I will pack include a good monopod and some gallon/quart storage bags. I would take the lens that you have. The 70-300 will get some great shots you will love later. I bought a sling bag and It holds all that you hve mentioned, plus a grip and Sb600 light. The bag is made well and can be had at Amazon Basic's for 25.00.. The storage bags will hold each piece of gear until and after it is used.sand is not friendly to my equipment.
BTW Them boats dont rock that much, in moderate weather. April is usually that way.

Wife and I went on a cruise in 2005 for our honeymoon.

She just finished her bachelors and our vacation last year(took my pedants to Virginia mountains) sucked! Mom broke her ankle on the first day.

So I figured I'd make it up to the wife with a good vacation again. Our last cruise was in October and we had a rough couple days in the Atlantic with a hurricane following us home. We cruise from New Jersey or New York. Will be on Norwegian.

Bob DW and I did a 15 day Hawaii cruse out of San Diego last May..Bad sea's going and coming back..45mph side winds..got a little blue in the gills.
The trips we have made in april Carribean..have all had moderate weather..we will be on the Breeze April 27th. 8 day to Aruba, turks ect.
ps if you haven't use a cruise site.. these roll calls are spacific to the ship and cruise you will be on..

If space/weight are considerations than I would say leave the 18-55 and if necessry the 50. DO NOT cheap out on a tripod - if you do, you will pay for it at some point. I've packed my beast of an all-metal Manfrotto 190 all over Asia and the Middle East. It gets heavy, but it's worth it.

Two things I would consider (in order of priority) are a polarizing filter (multi-coated Hoya or Tiffen at a minimum, Heliopan, Lee, Singh-Ray or B+W better) in the diameter of your largest lens and adaptor rings to fit your smaller ones, and a couple of graduated ND filters for sunsets, etc. You're going to be in a cruise-liner, in the Caribean, in the spring. It's not going to move much, if at all.

I think you'd better take the Tamron 17-50, Canon 70-300 and tripod (must have for landscapes!!!)

Wife and I have been on 4 cruises now. 2 Caribbean and 2 to the Mexican Riviera. I can only give you this advice: Pack light. This includes clothing as well as your gear. I found that a good small backpack works for most excursions on shore to carry bottled water, snacks, passports, a DSLR with a couple of lenses and a small tripod and any small items you may purchase while on shore. There are laundry facilities on the ship so don't overpack your clothing items. Take the camera and the 18-55 and the 70-300, a small tripod and your flash. You will be good for just about any situation you are likely to encounter.
If there's one thing we've learned it's to pack as light as possible. There is a lot of standing around in lines at the terminal and embarking / dis-embarking; extra clothing and gear will become dead weight after awhile.

As far as polerizers, I have one for the tamron that came with it. It's a promaster spectrum 7.


Any suggestions on a better one(or should I just use this one)
Also have a cheap nd4 filter that only fits the canon 18-55 and 70-300, suggestions?

In your position if taking everything isn't an option i would take camera 17-50+ 70-300 + flash and maybe buy a solid not full size tripod. That would cover a lot of possibilities

You need the 50. Sometimes it is nice you can go to 1.8 and not use flash.

No problems with sea sickness.

Wife had 1 bad day last time and ended up just getting drunk. Lol.
She complained the next day was just as bad but it's while we were docked and still lol!

Your wife. She might be interested in your other equipment. Spend more time with her, less time snapping pics.

Take the Tamron, the 70-300, your flash, and have a good time.

What will adding a flight do to my equipment suggestions?

Any issues with flying and camera equip?

Haven't been to a airport since 1996, what changes can be expected?
